2. Day of Service with RSS | Sixth Week Saturday, November 5 | 8:00 am | Bruin Plaza

Done with midterms? Come blow off some steam with your fellow RSSers at the UCLA-wide Day of Service sponsored by CSC! This is a great opportunity to give back to the community as well as meet fellow RSSers! Free lunch will be provided as well as live performances! Deadline for sign-ups are rapidly approaching so RSVP today on another google form! =D

3. UCLA/Cal Football Game | Saturday, October 29 | Rose Bowl Stadium

Cal Regents' and Chancellor's Scholars and UCLA RSSers will be going to the UCLA/Cal football game together, with a tailgate lunch to boot! If you are interested in attending, please RSVP with this form: RSVP Here! If you can't come to the game, check out the itinerary attached to the bulletin to join in on other festivities!

We will be leaving for the Rose Bowl at 11:30AM for the tailgate; RSVP by Wednesday, October 26 if you need a ride there! RSSers can purchase "UCLA Student Tickets" individually on MyUCLA under the "Event Reservations Section"

4. Hosts needed for the UCLA/Cal Football Game | Fifth Week Friday, October 28- Sunday, October 30

Cal Regents' and Chancellor's Scholars are visiting UCLA for the UCLA/Cal football game! Quite a few Cal students are coming, so hosts are desperately needed! If you can host students, please fill out the following form: Host Signup

5. Laser Tag | Sixth Week Tuesday, November 1 | 7:00 pm | TBA

Who's down for a few games of awesome laser tag with your fellow RSSers? There's no better kind of break from midterms! $16 for nondrivers and $13 for drivers. Please RSVP HERE by Monday, Oct. 31 at noon to Christina.

6. Wicked: The Musical | Winter Quarter Week 2, Thursday, January 19, 2012 | 8:00 pm | Pantages Theater, Hollywood

Broadway is coming to LA! Come experience this legendary show at seats that are right up front near the stage. The price including ticket, fees, and transportation is $65. Tickets are selling out fast so please guarantee your spot by RSVPing to Christina HERE and submitting your $12 down payment by Oct. 31.

You can do this through PayPal via OrgSync; cash and checks (made payable to Regents Scholar Society at UCLA) are also accepted. If you do not know what OrgSync is, check out this video, starting from 4 minutes.

8. Class Points War!| 2011-2012

A friendly little Hogwarts-esque competition between the classes: Which class will be the winner? Check out the most recent scores in the class wars competition! You can also see the most updated scores on the RSS website. Grand Prize is a trophy, engraved with your class year! There will also be quarterly prizes for the class that is in the lead at the end of each quarter.

How to earn points:
1. Attend committee meetings, general meetings, activities, and more!
2. Get a group of RSS friends (5 or more) to go on an outing, send in a picture to secretary@rssla.org, and earn points for your class!
3. Register your Ralphs Card!

Hey everyone! We'll be having dinner in De Neve dining hall before we walk down to Second General Meeting. We'll be meeting in the lobby by the lockers, so see you there!

10. Second General Meeting | Seventh Week Wednesday, November 9 | 7:00 pm | Career Center

Come join us for the second general meeting of the year! We'll be announcing new RSS events and opportunities to get involved, as well as learning professional skills from an esteemed member of the UCLA family! As always, we'll be meeting at De Neve Dining Hall at 6pm for a dorm dinner before the meeting. Stay tuned for an announcement about the location, and hope to see everyone there!

11. California Pizza Kitchen Fundraiser | Eighth Week Thursday, November 17 | all day/6:30 pm | Bruin Bear

RSS is having a CPK fundraiser! Sample this Westwood establishment while earning money for your favorite non-profit ;). While the fundraiser will be ongoing all day, a group of RSSers will be going as a group. We'll be meeting by the Bruin Bear at 6:30pm! For those planning on going at a different time of day, just show the attached flyer when you order!

13. LAMP SAT Tutoring

LAMP SAT Tutors needed for fall quarter! If you are interested in tutoring weekly afterschool SAT classes at University Senior High School, please email Lindsay at lnychun@gmail.com. It's a great opportunity to interact with a variety of high school students who come from all areas of LA and help them beat the test!

14. Ralphs Fundraiser | 2011-2012

Do you or your family buy groceries from Ralphs? If so, enroll your Rewards Card in our Ralphs fundraiser and you can raise money for RSS every time you shop! Simply print out the Fundraising Letter attached to the bulletin (the one with the barcode) and give it to the cashier when you check out, and a percentage of your purchases go to RSS at UCLA. You only need to show the letter the first time. Also attached is an email you can send to your family/friends asking them to join the fundraiser. (Don't forget to send them the barcode as well!)

14. Peer Mentor Program Sign-Ups

For all newcomers to RSS: We are starting a peer mentorship program which is designed to help you as incoming RSS freshmen and transfer students transition into UCLA and our RSS community. Current RSS members who volunteer to be mentors will be paired with incoming Regents Scholars based on their major and other interests/hobbies. While all incoming Regents Scholars will be given a mentor within RSS, if you fill out the form below, we hope to be able to better pair you with your mentor.

15. RSS Peer Mentor Volunteers Needed!

Interested in being a mentor? The new RSS Peer Mentor Program needs your help! The purpose of this program is to assist incoming freshmen and transfer Regents Scholars as they transition into UCLA and our RSS community. Responsibilities of a mentor include meeting with your mentee, attending Peer Mentor Activities, offering guidance, and providing both academic and non-academic support. Current RSS members and incoming Regents Scholars will be paired based on their major and other interests/hobbies. If you are interested in being a mentor in this program, please sign up at the following link: RSS Mentor Sign-Up Form

Matched mentors will be receiving an email with their mentee's information in October. While this is a relaxed program, we do stress that mentors remain involved, even if by email, with their mentee's progress throughout the year. Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to having you in the program!

Attention RSS! The first general meeting of the year will take place this Wednesday, October 5th at 7pm! You'll have a chance to meet the Executive Board, learn more about the society - including its different committees, which you should all join! - and more information about upcoming events. ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY FOR ALL FIRST YEARS AND NEW TRANSFERS, but of course everyone is encouraged to come out for this fun-filled meeting, which will include pizza for all! Attention newcomers to RSS! The second-annual Induction Ceremony will be taking place Week 3 Monday, October 10, from 7-9pm in Kerckhoff Grand Salon. This event is MANDATORY for all new Regents Scholars (both first years and transfer students). We would like to honor your achievement in being awarded the prestigious Regents Scholarship and recognize your dedication to excellence both inside and outside the classroom. Members of the Regents Scholarship selection committee will be attendance. Dress is business casual.

7. ASC Peer Tutoring Program | Friday, October 7

UCLA's Alumni Scholars Club is interested in recruiting RSSers to volunteer as tutors for their new peer tutoring program! Tutor Applications for RSSers are due on October 7th via email to tutoring@alumnischolarsclub.org. You will be notified of the status of your application no later than October 10th. If you are selected to be a tutor, you will be required to attend a Tutor Information Session on October 12th, and the program will start on October 17th.

President's Welcome Message

September 16th, 2011

Hello RSSers,

To all the new members of our society, welcome, I look forward to meeting each and every one of you, and to all the returning members, welcome back. The beginning of the year is always an exciting time, and a perfect time to reunite with old friends and make new ones. If you talk to any member of RSS they will surely tell you that we are as much a family as a society, and I guarantee you will make many new friends in RSS.

Last year marked a watershed year for RSS, with many, many, new (and successful) activities as well as old favorites such as Winter Retreat and OSP. This year promises to be just as exciting, and it all starts zero week with our welcome week barbeque. It’s a great time to meet other RSSers, and did I mention free Korean BBQ? Along with our zero week festivities, I’d like to point out one other important event, RSS Induction. New scholars, mark your calendars for Thursday, October 6th, this is one of our few MANDATORY events, and you surely will not want to miss out.

I could go on for hours about all the exciting activities planned for the society this year, but I should probably first introduce myself. My name is Ryan Kelly, and I will be serving as your humble President this year. I’ve been fortunate to meet so many of you as your Outreach (read OSP) director these past two years and I look forward the new challenges as President this year. When not at RSS’s latest and greatest activity, you may find me on the IM fields throwing a Frisbee around with Smaug, our club ultimate team, or courtside cheering on our Bruins, or even maybe in the front row rocking out to a concert. I also find time to study somewhere in between, and this will be my fourth (and sadly final) year at UCLA studying Chemical Engineering. I have been working at Genentech over the summer and at UCLA work in a lab dedicated to creating a targeted therapy for osteosarcomas; I hope to pursue similar work after I graduate, whether it is at a biotech company or in graduate school.

If you ever want to grab dinner, dessert, or just want to go explore, I am always open to an adventure, and I’ve heard my RSS-mobile is a great way to get around. Always feel free to give me a call at (650) 224-0090 or shoot me an email at president@rssla.org and I will be happy to help you in any way I can, whether it be class advice, landing that internship, or just to chat. If for some reason I don’t know the answer I’ll also help you get in contact with someone who does.

I look forward to seeing you all at 0 week barbeque, and remember what the society does is entirely up to you! Look out for our weekly bulletins, get involved early, and I challenge each and every one of you to make your own impact on RSS. I hope you are as excited as I am for the new school year, and see you in the fall!
