SAT Tutoring

LAMP hosts 10-week after-school SAT courses taught by trained tutors. These courses aim to offer University High students the same tools as those taking an SAT course from a professional company. Addressing recent studies demonstrating the inequity of standardized tests, LAMP’s SAT program seeks to make University High students just as competitive as those paying for SAT classes for college admissions and scholarships.

In order to accomplish this task, the SAT Program maintains three core goals:

  1. Provide SAT preparation to students at no charge
  2. Hold three SAT courses, which run the length of the quarter
  3. Proctor a full-length SAT practice exam under test-like conditions once a quarter

Features of the SAT Program:

  • Provides tutelage, advice and personal guidance from firsthand test takers absolutely free of charge.
  • Courses held on different days during the school week to accommodate student schedules
  • Administration and scoring of practice exams
  • Use of polls to assess student interest as well as the most convenient days for preparation classes
  • Materials subsidized through RSS funding
  • Provide notebooks and other basic materials to students
  • SAT preparation books (originally $20) sold to SAT course students for $5
  • Option of renting out books to students for $5 and allowing students to return them for full refund at the end of the course (if materials are still in good condition).
  • Offer book scholarships (for the test preparation book of the student’s choice) for winners of essay competitions
